Up Ancient Thebes

Luxor, located along the banks of the Nile in southern Egypt, is home to spectacular and well-preserved monuments, temples and tombs and, for that reason, is one of Egypt's most popular tourist destinations.

We traveled here by train from Cairo; roughly a 10 hour ride, made quite comfortable by our having bought 1st class tickets.

Perhaps our favorite archaeological site was Luxor Temple, located in the heart of Luxor.  As it was open at night, when the temperature cooled considerably and the flood lighting looked magical upon the sculptures and carved reliefs of the temples, we had a great time wandering around the complex.

Ramses II, who was a prodigious builder and quite fond of immortalizing himself in stone, sits over 30 feet high in an internal courtyard at Luxor.

Luxor Temple was originally built by Amenophis III, and added to by Tutankhamun, Ramses II, Alexander the Great and the Romans.

The Temples of Karnak are an enormous collection of temples, sanctuaries, obelisks, statutes, and sculptures, and at one time was the most important place of worship in all of Ancient Egypt.  The Pharaohs of Ancient Egypt continued to build upon this complex for over a period of 1500 years in honor of the God Amun-Ra.  Here Kelly, and our friend Veronica (from Ecuador) try to make sense of the complex.

The Temples of Karnak have also appeared on film in the James Bond film, The Spy Who Loved Me, and the film adaptation of Agatha Christie's, Death on the Nile.

With obelisks and palm trees in the background, we pose in front of the Sacred Lake that can be found at Karnak.  During the evening, we attended the spectacular and entertaining sound and light show of Karnak.  This time we did pay the $10 admission, and it was well worth it.
