Istanbul Part 2
Up

On our second day in Istanbul, we took a ferry up the Bosphorus Strait to the Black Sea.  The Bosphorus Strait is the body of water that links the Black Sea, to the north, with the Sea of  Marmara, to the south.  Futher, the Bosphorus Strait divides the continents of Europe and Asia.   Little wonder that Istanbul, giving its geography, has always been considered a bridge between East and West.

Meanwhile, yet another body of water--the Golden Horn--divides Old Istanbul (to the left) from New Istanbul (to the right).

Our ferry ride along the Bosphrus was a treat as we traveled from Europe, to Asia, back to Europe, back to Asia......

Here our ferry slips away as we disembark at one of the quaint villages sitting along the shore.

Here is the Bosphorus Bridge, a literal bridge (the first) between Asia and Europe.

On the Galata Bridge, which bridges the Golden Horn and connects Old with New Istanbul, fishing is one of the favorite pastimes.  Here a young boy inspects the catch of a local fisherman.

Who is that mysterious man holding a fish sandwich?  One of the joys of Turkey is the abundance of excellent, and cheap, street food.  Or in this case, "water" food, as the Golden Horn is dotted with small, moored boats that sell food from their decks.  The most common offering is a sandwich of grilled fish with tomato and onion.  Now that's some good eating.

Meanwhile, Kelly digs into some Turkish pastry: feta type cheese wrapped in layer upon layer of a phyllo type dough.  Most tasty, cheap and filling.

Continue with us as we wrap up our journey through Turkey and the Middle East in
Istanbul Part 3.
