Monteverde is spanish for "green mountain". The
name is very appropriate, as everywhere you turn, there is green. Green
trees, green grass, green parakeets, green hummingbirds, etc.. Monteverde
was founded by a group of American Quakers who came to Costa Rica after World
War II in search for a peaceful place. Costa Rica was the perfect country
for them since it did not have any armed forces or enemies. The Quakers
thought it very important to preserve the beautiful cloud forests, and that is
one of the reasons that why we are able to enjoy it today.
After a full day of travel from Nicaragua to Costa Rica, we arrived in
Monteverde and went directly to the Hotel Manakin. We met the owner, Mario,
while we were traveling, and he promised us a good room for a good price.
We were happy to find that the hotel was very nice with a great location up in
the mountains. After a good night of rest, we woke up and ate a delicious
breakfast which was prepared especially for us by Mario's wife,
Yolanda. We barely finished our toast, when our ride came to take us to
the Sky Trek and Sky Walk which are both located in the Monteverde cloud
forest. The Sky Trek was a thrilling ride on several zip wires above the
cloud forest canopy. The Sky Walk allowed us to walk high above the
forest along through the mountains which were connected by long extension
bridges. After an exciting day in the cloud forest, we stopped into town
and purchased some food for a delicious dinner that we would cook in our own
little kitchen that evening.

Kelly and Rich are fitted in their harnesses which would be used to attach
them to the zip wires.

Kelly walks on one of the many extension bridges in the Monteverde cloud
forest on her way to the first zip wire.

Rich monkeys around on the extension bridge. He had better get his
helmet on.

Sometimes it is better just not to look down.

Rich finally puts his helmet on as we approach one of the zip wires.
The hike through the cloud forest from one zip wire to the next was as fun and
exciting as the zip wires themselves.

Our group holds on as they look over the lookout tower which provided
breathtaking views for miles and miles.

A view of one of the extension bridges from the lookout tower.

WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!
Kelly and Rich fly high over the cloud forest with the greatest of ease.

Rich is still a little effected by the lack of oxygen.
